The Conversion Agenda

"Freedom to convert" is counterproductive as a generalized doctrine. It fails to come to terms with the complex interrelationships between self and society that make the concept of individual choice meaningful. Hence, religious conversion undermines, and in extremes would dissolve, that individual autonomy and human freedom.

Two Christian Insurgent Outfits Join Hands to Disrupt Elections

Agartala, Nov. 22 2005

The two banned militant outfits of Tripura, the All Tripura Tiger Force and the National Liberation Front of Tripura, have joined hands to take on the Left Front government.

The outfits have come together to organise “Mission-2008”, a codename for their joint operations aimed at dislodging the Left Front government in the Assembly elections scheduled to be held that year.

Two secret meetings were held at the Tiger Force base camp in Satcherri, under Bangladesh’s Habiganj district, and in a plush apartment in Dhaka rented by the NLFT. Leaders of both groups decided to join hands for a renewed offensive as well as to regain areas lost to security forces.

Highly-placed sources in the special branch (intelligence wing) of state police said the outfits have joined hands with an eye on the forthcoming elections to the village committees in Autonomous District Council (ADC) areas. The elections are likely to be held early next year.

“They are desperate to ensure that candidates sponsored by them win since the village committees have access to substantial funds for development,” a source said, adding that the militants have their eyes on the funds flow.

Sources said the recent escalation in militant attacks was the fallout of the rapprochement between the Tiger Force and the NLFT. Yesterday, three CRPF jawans and a driver were killed.

“We have received feedback that activists of both groups took part in the attack, as also in the earlier killing of two Tripura State Rifles jawans on October 26,” a source said. He, however, added that a new action plan was being drawn up to deal with the new threat.

“At present, they are trying to recruit more youths for insurgency as well as to mobilise funds. But they will not be allowed to succeed,” he added.
