The Conversion Agenda

"Freedom to convert" is counterproductive as a generalized doctrine. It fails to come to terms with the complex interrelationships between self and society that make the concept of individual choice meaningful. Hence, religious conversion undermines, and in extremes would dissolve, that individual autonomy and human freedom.

Swift action by the police and the fire force personnel averted a major fire mishap at the venue of the Benny Hinn’s programme at Jakkur on Saturday night.

Fire was spotted around 9 pm at a parking lot (near Jakkur cross) where more than 1,200 two-wheelers and 500 cars were parked. The fire soon spread engulfing five two-wheelers. The alert police along with the help of the public tried to douse the fire with sand. Meanwhile, three fire tenders which were stationed at different points at the venue, rushed to the spot and extinguished the flames.
“A little delay would have caused a major fire tragedy and would have caused panic among lakhs of people who had assembled at the venue,” said a police officer. Ruling out the possibility of miscreants’ role in the fire, police said that it was an accidental fire.

City peaceful

The protests by pro-Hindu activists against Hinn’s programme fizzled out on the second day. Except a couple of incidents, the city, which had witnessed widespread arsoning and protests on Friday, was peaceful on Saturday. A group of miscreants threw stones at a church in Jayanagar on Friday night and a group of VHP activists tried to block the traffic leading to the programme venue on Bellary road in the afternoon. However, police intervened and chased the protesters. The protesters had damaged around 300 buses on Friday. City Police Commissioner S Mariswamy said: “there was no problem today and everything was very peaceful.”
