The Conversion Agenda

"Freedom to convert" is counterproductive as a generalized doctrine. It fails to come to terms with the complex interrelationships between self and society that make the concept of individual choice meaningful. Hence, religious conversion undermines, and in extremes would dissolve, that individual autonomy and human freedom.

To Christianity For Its Pomp And Back For Solace

From Prasenjit Chakraborty in Agartala

The glittering environment in the church influenced me and I opted for conversion to Cristianity at the age of fourteen. I had no problem with Hinduism. Then I was a child. Now I am grown up and able to judge what is good or bad. My conscious mind says it is only Hinduism which can lead to complete and real life and nothing else. That’s why I returned to it.” Says Bhavani Jamatia.

Mrs. Bhavani, a tribal woman of 38, today came back to Hinduism through Jamatia Hoda’s reconversion ceremony ‘Lampra’ held at the head quarters’ of the organisation in Agartala. Bhavani converted to Catholic cristianity in 1983 when she was a student of class seven in Little Flower School at Shillong in Meghalaya. ‘Though nobody proposed but my soft mind got influenced by the shining atmosphere in and around the church run school and opted foreign religion’, she recalled. After that 23 years have passed. During this long period I did regularly visit Hindu mandirs because of my heart felt relation with the indegenous cultures, Bhavani added.

She alongwith her 12 year old daughter, Khafur, took the oath of devoting life to the development of mankind before Ojhai (the priest of Jamatia community). A puja was offered to god Lampra on this occasion. The spokesman of Jamatia Hoda, Mr. Rampada Jamatia, the Para Sarder of Agartala para, Mr. Purushottam Jamatia and a large crowd of reporters of print and electronic media were present at the spot.

Bhavani Devi is now working in Hindi Higher Secondery School at Agartala as the post graduate teacher in political science. She achieved masters degree on the subject from North East Hills University (NEHU). Besides her profession, she wishes to get involve herself in social work through Hoda. Talking to this newsman she informed that her husband may also come back in near future. According to her, no threat was received from any christian organisation so far. On the other side Hoda leader Rampada Jamatia assured her of full care and protection in case of any eventuality.
