The story of coerced conversions in the Valley is not a hoax, but a reality. The people involved stand identified and the government seems all set to take appropriate action.
According to highly placed sources in the secretariat, the Chief Minister directed the CID department to look into complaints of coerced conversions in some parts of the Valley. The enquiry found the complaints correct and accordingly a report was submitted to the government.
Soon, the government directed the education department to take appropriate action against a missionary school situated at Pulwama and its branch at Srinagar.
A show cause notice No Edu/R-493-K dated May 26, 2005 was served on the convenor of the schools.
The notice reads: “Whereas you have been running schools at Pulwama and Srinagar with permission and recognition from the government.
Whereas a complaint has been voiced on different occasions that the school is encouraging/inducing conversions.
Whereas the complaint was looked into.
Whereas, in the course of the inquiry, it has emerged that the Catholic Church activists who include convertees (name withheld) are luring people towards conversion, with monetary considerations, tour package, employment avenues etc. The students of the two branches are also given many facilities free of cost and that all this process takes place in a subtle manner.
Whereas such an action on the part of the school runs counter to the state policy, besides being likely to cause public unrest at some point of time or the other, and thereby even tend to create law and order problems.
Now therefore, you are as such asked to show cause by June 10,2005 as to why appropriate action which may include de-recognition/de-affiliation of the said school may not be taken against you.”
