More than 300 Hindu families are converted to Christianity in Puri district every year without the knowledge of the district administration, said Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) national leader Subash Chouhan.
Mr Chouhan told reporters that the VHP has launched the SEVA Project in the district to protect Hindus from the missionaries by improving their financial status. Missionaries are targeting poorer sections of Hindus for conversion by luring them with pecuniary benefits, he alleged.
Mr Chouhan said that missionaries have been continuing their activities in Brahmagiri, Konark and Puri. In 1982, only 150 Hindus families in the Penthakata Noliasahi area of Puri town were converted. But in the last 20 years, more than 2,200 Christian families are found to be residing in this locality, which now has as many as 12 churches, he said.
Similarly, he said, more than 1,000 Christian families are now staying in Keutakudi, Sitalpada, Khandualapur, Barabati, Begunia and Sahadevpur areas of Brahmagiri Block. Within a month, 36 Hindu families of Brahmagiri Block and 300 families of Krushnaprasad Block were converted into Christianity.
Bajrang Dal State leader Umakanta Acharya also alleged that some foreign agents and missionaries have been trying to influence poor Hindus.
