Court Awards Death Sentence to Christian Militant for Killing 15

A District Court in Tripura today sentenced a National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) militant to death after finding him guilty in a massacre of 15 villagers in West Tripura in February 1997.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Subhash Bhattacharjee read out his judgement of capital punishment along with two seperate life imprisonment to the dreaded militant inside a packed courtroom guarded by a large contingent of Tripura State Rifles and police led by senior officials.
Ashok Debbarma alias Achak was convicted under sections 302 and other provisions of the Indian Penal Code for killing 15 non-tribal villagers, including two children and some women, at Jarulbachai under Takarjala Police Station in West Tripura in February 1997.
Ashok along with other NLFT guerrillas also burnt down more than 35 houses of the victims during the midnight violence.
Justice Bhattacharjee quoting various relevant Supreme Court judgements said " this is the rarest of rare cases" of organised crime against the hapless innocent poor people. '' The militants even did not spare infants and aged women,'' the Judge remarked.
This is for the first time a militant was awarded capital punishment by the court in Tripura. Another dreaded NLFT extremist remained absconding as he was also accused in the case.
The judgement will be sent to the High Court for confirmation of the death sentence, Justice Bhattacharjee told the accused and said that he can appeal before the High Court against this judgement within a month.
Incidentally, Justice Bhattacharjee awarded another death sentence on June 3 to a man for raping and murdering a 7-year-old girl in 2002.
