The Conversion Agenda

"Freedom to convert" is counterproductive as a generalized doctrine. It fails to come to terms with the complex interrelationships between self and society that make the concept of individual choice meaningful. Hence, religious conversion undermines, and in extremes would dissolve, that individual autonomy and human freedom.

The BJP today said that the ethnic clashes in Karbi Anglong district was the 'outcome of politics of conversion'.

BJP's Assam legislature party leader Bimalangshu Roy said the Dimasas were traditionally believers of Hinduism.

''Unlike other tribal communities of the North-East, the Dimasas over the centuries, have successfully thwarted the Churches’ bid to convert them to Christianity. They have come under aggression on several occasions from religious front. This time also the forces of conversion may have a hand behind this ethnic clash,'' he said.

Addressing a press conference here the senior BJP leader said in the past the role of the Church was very open and clear about such incidents. He alleged that in Karbi Anglong the Congress had been aiding conversion, thus adding fuel to the ethnic clashes. Mr Roy demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi for his government’s 'failure' to control the situation.

BJP and Trinamool Gana Parishad on Thursday feared religious fundamentalists could take advantage of the situation in the ethnic strife-torn Karbi Anglong district.

"We fear some religious groups may take advantage of the situation and start conversion of the people," BJP central leader in charge of Assam S S Ahluwalia, told reporters here.

VHP today alleged religious conversion was the motive behind the killings.
"The objective is to provide relief and make the victims convert to Christianty", VHP supremo Ashok Singhal told reporters here.
