The Conversion Agenda

"Freedom to convert" is counterproductive as a generalized doctrine. It fails to come to terms with the complex interrelationships between self and society that make the concept of individual choice meaningful. Hence, religious conversion undermines, and in extremes would dissolve, that individual autonomy and human freedom.

God-fearing Padris in league with godless comrades

The fact that the Church and the Communists are moving closer was already revealed by the watchful media. And now it comes straight from the horse’s mouth! The cat is at last out from the Church-bag (or is it from the Padre’s gown!) when the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) president said (on Feb. 2) that the “Communists are no more untouchable to the Church.”

Long after the god-fearing theology and the godless ideology started cohabiting, and the birth of “Liberation Theology”, the relationship now seems to have been legitimized and solemnized. In tune with the end product of long cohabitation, the CBCI president Telesphore Cardinal Toppo now defends his alliance partner. “The ‘reformed’ Communists are in the forefront in the struggle for justice. In this fast changing socio-political scenario, the role of the Indian Communists seems to be more relevant,” said Cardinal Toppo. Anyhow, one thing is sure and that is, the marriage of convenience is now solemnized long after the baby was born. Halleluiah!

While the Cardinal compliments the left partner by stating that the Left has been responsible in ensuring secular (read “anti-Hindu”) governance, he says, as a God-fearing Padre, he is apolitical and ‘universal’ (available to many partners). “I am not lenient to any political front. As a Cardinal I belong to all”, said Cardinal Toppo. “But the only cardinal sin is the God-fearing Church going after the godless comrades. What an irony of fate!” a wag commented.
