The Sevalal Banjara Hitavardhaka Sangha of Hubli, an organisation fighting for the cause of Lambani community, has threatened to launch a massive stir if the government failed to prevent forced conversions of the community’s members.
The association announced its decision at a conference of the office-bearers of its various units in North Karnataka held here on Sunday. The Banjaras will stage token demonstrations in front of the Deputy Commissioners’ offices on Feb 1 in protest against forced conversions already taking place at several places and demanding stringent action against the culprits.
The conference charged that a 10-member group of Christian youths had already converted by force about 100 innocent, poor and illiterate Lambani members in Haveri and two each in Dharwad and Goudageri. Association president Pandurang Pammar alleged an organised racket was working behind conversions and destroying Lambani culture and art.
The conference demanded at least one berth in the Cabinet for Banjara community and warned that the Association would stage a week-long dharna in front of the Chief Minister’s residence in Bangalore followed by ‘Delhi Chalo’ to meet AICC president Sonia Gandhi.
The conference was inaugurated by Minister for Youth Welfare and Sports Jabbarkhan Honnalli. Banjara leaders S K Pawar, Venkatesh Nayak, H S Lamani and K L Kalya Nayak were present.
