Nalbari: A 10,000-strong mob on Wednesday set ablaze a Catholic mission school and a church in Lower Assam’s Bhaska district.
Police said the mob shouted slogans accusing the mission authorities of illegally occupying land for constructing the building for St Joseph English School at Nagrijuli in the Tamulpur police station area.
They pelted stones before setting the two-room school building on fire and the church nearby. The missionaries and teachers present there escaped unhurt.
The police arrived soon after and brought the situation under control.
Sensing there may be trouble as tension was building up since on Tuesday, the school authorities asked the students not to come to school on Wednesday.
Additional security forces had been deployed in the area to prevent further violence, the sources said.
