Six Jamatiya tribals killed in Tripura

Six persons belonging to Jamatiya tribal community were gunned down by the National Liberation Front of Tripura insurgents in five villages under Killa police station of South Tripura district, police said on Monday.

A group of about 10 insurgents, armed with sophisticated weapons, raided Aimingbari village on Sunday night and shot dead Souren Jamatiya, an activist of Hoda, the religious and social apex body of the Jamatiya community.

The ultras then raided neighbouring Noabari and gunned down Harendra Jamatiya, a local committee member of the CPI-M, and his wife Alibala, police said.

The three other victims were Brahmanda Jamatiya of Horebari village, Bbipannakumar Jamatiya of Tulabari and Uttambasi Jamatiya belonging to Jangibari village.

The DIG (range) A K Shukla, accompanied by the south Tripura SP rushed to the area with additional reinforcement and launched a search operation to track down the ultras.

Condemning the killing, Hoda, in a statement, said the killings were an onslaught on the traditional social and religious system of the community.

The NLFT started killing Hoda activists when it opposed the outfit's move to convert all tribal communities of the state to Christianity, the statement said.
