The Conversion Agenda

"Freedom to convert" is counterproductive as a generalized doctrine. It fails to come to terms with the complex interrelationships between self and society that make the concept of individual choice meaningful. Hence, religious conversion undermines, and in extremes would dissolve, that individual autonomy and human freedom.

The BJP today accused the NSCN(IM) of interfering in the current spell of violence in Assam's Karbi Anglong district.

Addressing a press conference here, BJP in-charge of Assam S S Ahulwalia alleged that there was an ''invisible hand'' in the violence and hinted at the NSCN.

He alleged that the NSCN had tried to meddle into the affairs of the district administration by trying to convert some of the affected people to Christianity.

Mr Ahulwalia who led a high level team of the BJP to the affected areas, however, blamed the inefficiency of the district administration for the escalation of violence.

He admitted that there was an inherent lacuna in the whole concept of the ceasefire because of which both the militant groups the United People's Democratic Solidarity (UPDS) and Dima Halim Dagogah (DHD) were fighting.

The BJP has demanded a judicial inquiry into the violence. They also met Governor Lt Gen Ajay Sinha to seek his intervention.

''We demand that the Governor should dismiss the Autonomous Council and take over power,'' Mr Ahulwalia said.
